I like to write fiction. However, it is getting harder and harder to come up with ideas to write about. I’m about ready to surrender.
The problem is…I’m having a hard time coming up with fiction ideas that can match the craziness of the real world. Too often, my “fiction” isn’t really “fiction” anymore.
Case in point…It isn’t unexpected that a huge amount of our government’s technology being used for top secret operations have powerful security programs on them to protect them from being hacked…and that encrypt the “critical” files so they are secure. Ok, nothing unexpected there, right?
But did you read the news this week? It has now been revealed that the “super secure” software used to protect our “super secret” government data is from Kapersky Lab, a Russian company with ties to Russian Intelligence. The owner, Eugene Kapersky, came from the cryptology institute of the KGB, and was an engineer for Soviet military intelligence. Ring any bells with that election hacking thing recently?
Now, I’m not trying to get all political here or make any accusations. I’m simply saying that if I were to have written those details in one of my book chapters, reviewers and readers would be screaming…”nobody would be that stupid! Not even the government.” It would have been too big of a stretch for fiction.
But, there it is.
I’m one of those guys who always has a head full of crazy ideas to turn into a good fiction story. But geez…when the world itself becomes a fiction story…how am I supposed to keep up?
